Having been in the teaching profession for nearly 30 years and am a deputy headteacher in an outstanding school, I have observed a severe decline in the basic knowledge that new entrants to the professionhave even though they have at least 2:2 degrees, I am surprised that universities are wasting their time on the theatrical aspects of engaging students on serious topics in chemistry. It is about time that students had to learn and reproduce key facts in a more traditional ways such as tests and exams that have an appropriate level of rigour unlike the current regime of assessment that is producing sub standard graduates.
